Restoring Welsh peatlands – for people and wildlife

Work to restore Welsh peatlands is showing signs of success – but there’s a lot more to do. That’s the key message from the Wales Peatland Action Group as the Welsh Government’s Minister for Natural Resources Carl Sargeant prepares to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, which runs from 30 November to 11 December 2015.

Peatland Code launch creates hope for peatlands

This week, the IUCN UK Peatland Programme (IUCN UK PP) launched the Peatland Code at the World Forum for Natural Capital held in Edinburgh. The prestigious conference saw over 500 delegates from across the globe come together to discuss what natural capital was and how various tools could be applied to help stem the loss of our natural habitats and wildlife.

The IUCN UK Peatland Programme is delighted to be launching the Peatland Code at the World Forum on Natural Capital on the evening of November 23rd. This innovative scheme will enable businesses to help restore some of the world's most iconic and wild landscapes, with real benefits for climate, wildlife and local communities.

Scotland's first National Peatland Plan published

Chair of the IUCN UK Peatland Programme, Jonathan Hughes, said: “Scotland’s National Peatland Plan is a vital to tackling the globally important issue of peatland conservation. We must all play our part but clear leadership from the Scottish Government with the right policies and funding in place is essential if people are to be empowered to look after Scotland’s peatlands and appreciate their true benefits to society.”

IUCN UK Peatland Programme announced as finalist of the European Natura 2000 Award – 2015

The Peatland Programme has been announced as one of 23 finalists out of 90 applications received from across the EU. The award aims to bring the success of the Natura 2000 network to the public’s attention and to demonstrate the network’s importance for protecting biodiversity across Europe.
