Peak District bog scientists take home national award

Volunteer scientists based in the Peak District and South Pennines have won the prestigious 2017 Campaign for National Parks ‘Park Protector’ award and collected a £2000 grant.

£6 million invested in restoring nature’s natural carbon store in Northern England

A new £6 million project launches today to help fix large swathes of Pennine peatland over the next four years. The project, Pennine PeatLIFE, which will take place in areas of the North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales and Forest of Bowland, will fix currently damaged areas of blanket bog or ‘peat bog’, so that they once more provide homes for wildlife, store carbon to help us combat climate change and help filter clean water for us to drink.

Fairy-tale in Edale as rare habitat is celebrated at festival-style conference in remote Peak District village.  This September, nearly 300 international experts in peatlands came together to learn, share and celebrate the wonder of bogs at BogFest, a conference delivered with a festival atmosphere.

Peatland Management and Conservation in Latvia

Latvia is a relatively small peatland nation in comparison to Scotland. However, the ailments of Latvian peatlands are strikingly similar: pressures from forestry plantations, drainage, peat extraction for fuel and horticulture plus the added pressures of climatic change all resonated with me.  The scale of the Latvian landscape feels vast and their forest and peatland habitats much larger and less fragmented than those in Scotland. They feel truly wild.  Perhaps this is the way they once were in the UK?   Lake Kaņieris

Maximise the Impact of your Research with Conservation Evidence

The Yorkshire Peat Partnership (YPP) have been using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) since 2012 to survey and map areas of degraded upland habitats throughout the mountains and hills of the low-rising Pennine mountain range in northern England.
