Charity works with Ayrshire Farmer to restore precious peatlands

The East Ayrshire Coalfield Environment Initiative (CEI) is delighted to have rounded off 2017 with the completion of a new phase of peatland habitat enhancement at a farm near Cumnock, East Ayrshire. This brings the area of peatland enhanced by the CEI within the East Ayrshire Coalfields to 479 hectares!
A Flow Country World Heritage Site?

The Flow Country of Sutherland and Caithness has been on the UK’s tentative list of World Heritage Sites since 1999. It is widely regarded by experts as being the best peatland of its type in the world!
Nethergill mired in success

The latest NVC survey for Nethergill shows a marked improvement in the condition of blanket bog on site. Prepared for the Yorkshire Peat Partnership (YPP), the survey shows that several UK Priority Habitats have improved markedly since the baseline survey in 2011.
Nethergill Farm is located in Oughtershaw, Upper Wharfedale, North Yorkshire, and contains the following UK Priority Habitats:

25 Year Environment Plan Signals New Era for England's Peatlands

The UK Government has signalled a new era for peatlands with a long term commitment to their restoration and protection in today’s 25 Year Environment Plan. The IUCN UK Peatland Programme has long highlighted the public services provided by healthy peatlands such as clean drinking water, climate change and flood mitigation, and welcomes the recognition of these from UK Government.
Flying success at Yorkshire Peat Partnership

Yorkshire Peat Partnership has now flown its UAV over 23 sites covering 7,900ha and developed a range of approaches for analysing the subsequent data. With the addition of the two new UAVs and training six new pilots in the New Year, the programme will be able to substantially increase the amount of UAV flying they can do.
