Royal Highland Show: A Peatland Briefing

David Johnstone, Chairman of Scottish Land & Estates has great pleasure in inviting you to a briefing on Peatlands and the Peatland Code at The Scottish Land & Estates Stand at The Royal Highland Show

June 23rd 2016, 11am – 11:30am

Covering 10% of the UK's land area, peatlands are a key part of Scotland’s natural capital.  They are our largest natural carbon store and, when healthy and functioning, they play a key role in flood management and the provision of clean drinking water. They are also special places for wildlife. Safeguarding this important part of our environment is a major and urgent challenge with direct relevance to business and our economy.

Landowners and managers across Scotland have already shown great enthusiasm and willingness to restore damaged areas of peat to ensure these benefits are realised.  More needs to be done however and Scottish Land & Estates fully supports efforts to see this happen.  In particular we are keen to make members aware of an exciting new partnership between business, government and landowners and managers that provides restoration opportunities.

During the briefing, you will hear from David Johnstone and from Jonny Hughes, IUCN UK Peatland Programme Chair and we will play a video outlining the many benefits, not only to wider society, but to land-based businesses themselves, of taking action to manage our peatlands sustainably.  There will also be an opportunity following the briefing to get more information on the Peatland Code and discuss the restoration of your own peatlands with Clifton Bain, Director of the IUCN UK Peatland Programme.

We hope you can join us on the 23rd June and look forward to seeing you there.
