Throughout the year, the IUCN UK Peatland Programme has been celebrating the incredible biodiversity that peatlands support through a series of species showcases introducing weird and wonderful plants, animals and other organisms that call these precious habitats home.
Our latest showcase introduces the endangered Atlantic salmon, an iconic species with huge cultural and economic significance and one of the most incredible migrations in the natural world. These tenacious fish are dependent on clean and clear water in which to lay their eggs, and healthy peatlands are excellent at filtering water.
The showcase explains the fascinating salmon lifecycle, the threats to this beautiful but vulnerable fish and the research helping us understand the impacts of peatland damage and peatland restoration on water quality.
