Humberhead Peatlands Restoration
Introduction
Thorne and Hatfield Moors National Nature Reserve make up the largest lowland peat bog in England. This project covers the continuing restoration work.
Description
The site consists of two seperate bogs, about 5 km apart, and covering a total of 2800 ha. The sites are surrounded by intensively drained farmland, some on what was previously bog, and have been extensively cut over for peat.

Restoration of active peat formation over the bog
Restoration Delivered
Initial phase of ditch blocking and damming 1994, several phases of limited bund creation 1997-2005, major restoration effort creating large network of bunded cells and instilation of dams 2005-2007, ongoing programmes of scrub removal throughout and since.
Site Activity
Currently in the implementation phase of a Water Level Management Plan, involving instlling water management structures such as dams and bunds.
