Fens East Peat Partnership (FEPP)
Introduction
The FEPP has been awarded a Nature for Climate Peatland Discovery Grant to investigate the state of 20 peatland sites across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk and produce plans for their restoration and management. Several of these sites are at Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire.
Description
Once a vast area of wild wetland, today less than 1% of the original fenland habitats remain as fragments scattered across the East Fens. Drainage and extraction has resulted in the loss of specialised native species, rich vegetation cover and peat forming ecosystems. With the information collected from site surveys and baseline data we are working with FEPP’S partners and private landowners and farmers to create detailed plans to restore the damaged peat. Other project activities include training in peatland restoration and sampling techniques, workshops in private funding and income opportunities, landowner and wider public engagement to share more information about peatlands and the benefits they can provide us with. Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust are leading the project on behalf of The National Trust, Natural England, Norfolk Wildlife Trust, RSPB and the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.
