During March over 600,000 sphagnum moss plugs plants, covering over 500 hectares, have been planted across the Peak District National Park and South Pennines Special Area of Conservation.
Each plug plant contains 11 different species to allow the most suitable species to grow in its ideal location. This has been delivered across 11 different sites covering catchment areas for United Utilities, Yorkshire Water and Severn Trent Water.
The work is being done under the MoorLIFE2020 project and is funded by the EU Life Programme, Natural England and Yorkshire Water. MoorLIFE2020 is a 5 year project aiming to protect remaining active blanket bog in the South Pennines Special Area of Conservation.
This has been one of the largest single sphagnum application programmes attempted in a month!
