Clifton Bain, Director of the IUCN UK Peatland Programme, welcomed the inclusion of the Flow Country of Caithness and Sutherland in the UK's bid for World Heritage status sites:
"Peatlands are our biggest natural carbon stores and internationally important for biodiversity. The Flow Country is the largest of the UK's peatland sites and it really deserves this accolade which will help focus attention on the global significance of these valuable peatland habitats."
