The twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss are two of the biggest threats facing humanity and the many species with which we share our planet, and on which we depend. Accurate and reliable assessment of biodiversity is critical to understanding our impact on the natural world and how to achieve ecosystem recovery.

Join the IUCN UK Peatland Programme for this free webinar as we explore traditional and technological approaches to measuring biodiversity and how they are being applied in restoring and conserving our precious peatlands.

Speakers:

Brian Eversham, CEO of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire

Back to basics: the importance of species identification skills - Brian will introduce some of the fascinating organisms that call peatlands home, and the importance of identification skills and training for successful conservation.

Jenna Lawson, Ecological Network Coordinator at the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology

Technology versus tradition: Emerging methods for monitoring biodiversity - Jenna will explain the emerging techniques being used in biodiversity assessment, and the pros and cons of these technological approaches.

Nathan Thomas, Project Development and Community Engagement Officer at Lancashire Peat Partnership

Bog biodiversity monitoring: Experiences of the peatland practitioner - Nathan will discuss the Lancashire Peat Partnership’s approaches to biodiversity assessment and their experience of emerging techniques for planning and monitoring peatland restoration.

Jessica Gauld, PhD student in peatland palaeoecology at the University of Manchester

Collaborative palaeoecology: Using the past to plan for the future - Jessica will introduce the science of palaeoecology and the importance of collaborative methods in maximising the impact of this type of research for contemporary conservation.

Joe Anderson, Biodiversity Crediting Project Officer at the IUCN UK Peatland Programme

Biodiversity crediting: Exploring new options for unlocking nature finance in the UK - Joe will share current progress in developing a biodiversity crediting process for the Peatland Code, the IUCN UK Peatland Programme’s voluntary carbon finance standard.

The talks will be followed by a Q&A session with all the speakers.
