South West Peatland Partnership awarded gold by Global Good Awards

October 8, 2024

The South West Peatland Partnership (SWPP) won a Gold award at the Global Good Awards for their work restoring peatlands across Dartmoor, Exmoor, and Cornwall. This recognition celebrates large-scale ecological improvements worldwide. The judges praised SWPP for its collaborative, cross-sector approach that integrates environmental, historic, social, and economic benefits.

The South West Peatland Partnership is a proud collective of 20+ organisations working with landowners, commoners, farmers, charities, volunteers, contractors and local interest groups to make a positive difference to the future of our region's peatlands. SWPP  is aiming to restore 2,634 hectares of degrading peatland, preventing the emission of 652,625 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. Restoration efforts on Exmoor, Dartmoor and Cornwall peatlands have already helped reduce stormwater runoff by nearly half, attracted wildlife like dunlin birds, and cut dissolved organic carbon runoff by a third. The project has also created over 60 jobs, with innovations like using local wool and wood byproducts playing a key role in restoration efforts.
