Peatland Restoration a key target in the new Cairngorms National Park Partnership Plan

June 14, 2017

The Cairngorms National Park Partnership Plan (CNPPP) is the overarching management plan for the Cairngorms National Park. It sets out how all those with a responsibility for the National Park will co-ordinate their work to tackle the most important issues over the next five years. Roseanna Cunningham, the Scottish Government’s Environment Secretary launched the new Plan on 1 June 2017.

This document sets out a range of outcomes and targets for the next five years on topics covering conservation, visitor experience and rural development. A target of 5,000 hectares of peatland restoration is set within the plan to be achieved by 2022. This will contribute towards the Scottish Government’s national targets as set out in the National Peatland Plan and the draft Climate Change Plan. Preliminary work by the Cairngorms Peatland Action Project Officer has identified over 35,000 hectares of degraded peatland with further peatlands still to be mapped.
