Peatland Code to be launched at World Forum on Natural Capital

November 3, 2015

The IUCN UK Peatland Programme is delighted to be launching the Peatland Code at the World Forum on Natural Capital on the evening of November 23rd.

This innovative scheme will enable businesses to help restore some of the world's most iconic and wild landscapes, with real benefits for climate, wildlife and local communities.

Peatlands are in dire need of restorative action, in their degraded state releasing 3 million tonnes of carbon a year in the UK alone. On a global scale, peatlands are responsible for almost 6% of carbon dioxide emissions produced by humans. Yet, this can be prevented and restoration work has been shown to be very effective, quickly stemming much of that loss and gradually becoming a carbon sink (taking carbon in) rather than source.

The Peatland Code is a voluntary standard for peatland projects in the UK, designed to the highest environmental standards on climate change mitigation and other benefits of restoration such as improved water quality and wildlife habitat. With a number of projects ready to go and the UK a leader in practical restoration work, it is hoped that businesses will sponsor these projects, whilst enabling them to enhance brand integrity, deliver on corporate sustainability objectives and contribute to the protection and enhancement of our natural environment, which provides us with so many goods and services.

Read more about the pilot phase of the Peatland Code or book a place at the World Forum on Natural Capital.
