Natural England and Defra commissioned an independent team of social scientists to find out what land managers and other key stakeholders think of the proposed England Peat Strategy, and what it would take to achieve widespread engagement with the strategy. Using a combination of qualitative interviews, photo survey, portrait photography and deliberative valuation workshops, the research provides a richly textured and deep understanding of the hopes, fears and insights of those who will be most affected by the new strategy.
The research was part of Natural England’s Peat Pilots programme, researching and testing policy options for the England Peatland Strategy in Dartmoor, the East Anglian fens, Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Cumbria and Northumberland, and the North York Moors. In addition to the research team, colleagues from Defra and Natural England, and the project's Steering Group will be joining the discussion.
